Why TpT Sellers Need to be on Pinterest

Imagine sitting on your couch one day after school, and you pull up your TpT income report for the month.

You notice that your products are selling much better than they were this time last year. But you haven’t been particularly active promoting your stuff. You haven’t written any emails or posted to your social media pages very much at all. No new blogs, very few new products. Why is it that your sales have gone up when your activity has not?

The reason you’re seeing sales today is that you have been using Pinterest to promote your TpT business, and it is working. And now, after putting in some work on the platform, you are reaping the rewards of steady, organic traffic coming to your store and spending money.

Isn’t Pinterest dead?

Aren’t so many people telling you that Pinterest is a waste of time and it doesn’t work?

Nobody uses Pinterest anymore. Or so you’ve heard.

But the truth is that Pinterest is an active platform whose users are quite valuable. It also has additional benefits that can catapult your TpT business to new levels of success.

Pinterest Usage

With almost half a billion active users, Pinterest is the 15th largest social media platfom.

I bet you’re having a hard time even coming up with 15 social media platforms, so here they are.

Pinterest averages over 1 billion monthly visits with over 1.5 billion pins being saved each week! The traffic your TpT store and blog could capture from these users is substantial.

You might be thinking, why not spend your time and energy on some of the other social media platforms on this list? And while that’s a valid thought, I plan to convince you why Pinterest is a better investment than these other platforms by the end of this article.

The Happiest Place on Earth

8 out of 10 Pinterest users say that their time on the platform is a positive experience. Other social media platforms come nowhere near this number.

This statistic will explain many of the numbers that you see below, but beyond that, it shows that Pinterest will have a longer life than many other social media platforms.

It’s no secret that social media can be negative, and many people will detox themselves from these platforms by deleting them. You don’t have to worry about that with Pinterest. If someone were to start removing all their social media apps from their phone, Pinterest would be the one that remained.

We’ve seen many social media platforms die. There are rumors that several of the ones on the list above will face the same fate soon. Besides Facebook, the one I would be least concerned about it going away is Pinterest. This is because Pinterest users are loyal and love the platform, and they don’t suffer from the same negative consequences that they do on other platforms.

And while this, alone, is not reason enough to start investing more time on the platform, it might help explain some of the statistics I am going to share below.

Pinterest Users are Very Valuable

A Pinterest user is worth a lot. They are highly engaged and willing to spend money.

50% of Pinterest users say that they use Pinterest as a shopping destination. In other words, they are going to the platform to spend money.

75% of Pinterest users say that they are always shopping.

A Pinterest shopper spends twice as much money on Pinterest as they do on any other platform. They also spend 80% more per month than users of other social media platforms. That’s huge! Your Pin is worth more than your Facebook or Instagram post or your Tik Tok Reel.

85% of weekly Pinterest users have made a purchase on the platform, which is considerably more than any other social media platform.

There are also some interesting stats about the demographics of Pinterest users, such as how much money they make and where they live, that also show why this platform does well. But since our audiences are teachers, home school parents, and schools, we will look at other metrics.

Greater Opportunity for Brand Discovery

96% of Pinterest searches are unbranded. Which means you can get your Pins and products in front of your ideal audience, even if you don’t have a huge following (yet).

80% of Pinterest users have discovered a new brand or product on Pinterest.

Your Pinterest Pins also rank high on search Engines. If you do a search for something on your blog or in your TpT store, your Pin will be one of your highest ranking results on Google – often higher than the actual page you are searching for.

Pinterest will get you more organic traffic because of how well it does on these search engines.

Pins Live Forever

Perhaps the greatest reason you should be spending time on Pinterest, as opposed to other social media platforms, is that your Pins live forever!

If you make a post on Instagram or a TikTok Reel, it will go out and reach a percentage of your audience. If it does well, it will expand and reach new viewers who could become your audience for the entire week.

But after that day, or week if you’re lucky, your post dies, and you get no more traffic from it.

A Pin, on the other hand, lives forever. Pinterest is a search engine, so these Pins continue to show up in people’s searches for the rest of time – whether that search is on Pinterest, Google, Bing, or any other search engine. It keeps working for you.

For this reason, a Pin can be much more valuable than a post on another platform.

Why People are Down on Pinterest

You might have heard Pinterest is dead, it doesn’t work, or it’s a waste of time. Hopefully, the stats listed above have persuaded you otherwise. But if all of that is true, why all the nay-sayers?

To quote Warren Buffet, “No one wants to get rich slow.”

When you post a Pin, it will likely take several months for it to be effective. This is because Pinterest relies heavily on Search Engine Optimization strategy, and that takes time. Normally, a search engine takes between three and six months to properly index and optimize your post.

So posting a Pin doesn’t have the feel-good emotions that posts on other social media platforms might have. You work and work and work, and you won’t see the benefits for a while.

But like a snowball rolling downhill, your hard work will eventually turn into a large ball of traffic and sales.

If you start posting now, consistently, in several months (or maybe in a year) you will be the person I spoke of at the beginning of this post, reaping huge benefits without having to constantly create new content.
