Why You Need Good Free Products on Teachers Pay Teachers

You started selling on Teachers Pay Teachers to make some extra money. No one should blame you for that. It’s not wrong to want extra money. And as teachers, we definitely need it!

So what’s the deal with giving stuff away for free?

How does that fit into your goal of making money?

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to make money on Teachers Pay Teachers is to give stuff away for free.

Don’t Believe Me?

If you don’t believe me when I tell you that free products are very important if you want to make money on TpT, go onto the website and look up some of the best sellers. Go onto their store and click the “sort by” button and select the option to organize by price (low to high). By doing this, you will see all of their lowest cost items first, which means you’ll see all their free stuff! I’ve yet to come across a store that was making a lot of money that didn’t have a lot of free products listed.

Why it Works

Giving away free products does several things that allow you to make money, even though your giving stuff away for free.

1 – It builds brand recognition

2 – Free advertising

3 – They’re more likely to like and follow your store

4 – You can include other items in your download that will help drive sales

Brand Recognition

This is a powerful thing. It’s why companies pay millions of dollars on marketing every year. When people download your products, it’s one more interaction that they’ve had with you and your brand. Which means they’re more likely to remember you and your store.

This is important because when it’s time for them to actually purchase something, they are more likely to do it from someone they know and trust – someone who’s work quality they’ve already tested and know that it’s good.

Free Advertising

When someone downloads your free stuff, if they like it, what will they likely do?

Answer: Share it with their friends.

So hopefully, you’ve put your name on it, so that everyone is seeing your product and learning about your name. Not only will it build brand recognition, but it might also generate curiosity. Curious teachers might come visit your store and see what other great products you have.

So make your products good, and make sure they have your name on it (or better yet, links to your store!)

They’re Likely to Follow Your Store

When people follow your TpT store, first it looks good. It’s great to have hundreds or thousands of followers following you. When other people visit your page, they’ll see that and have a more favorable opinion of your products.

Beyond that, whenever you upload a new product to your Teachers Pay Teachers store, the platform automatically emails all of your followers to let them know that you have something new.

This is free advertising!

This is also why you should wisely consider what days you upload your new products, as picking the right day may increase sales.

When you give a free product away, you should include a thank you page. That page gives you an opportunity to communicate with your customers and tell them anything you want!

So what should you say?

After thanking them for downloading your free resource, you want them to stay connected with you. So encourage them to like your social media pages, or to like and follow you on TpT.

You can also include links to other products.

A great download idea would be a short letter that says, “thanks for downloading this free product. Be sure to like and follow me on TpT so that you can see the other great resources I have. Speaking of, if you like this (the thing they just downloaded) you should also check out this thing (link to a similar product that’s for sale).“
