  2. Versatile – Escape rooms can be used in nearly any subject, making them highly adaptable to different grade levels and topics.
  3. Higher Price Point – Because of their interactive nature and extensive prep, escape rooms typically sell for a higher price than standard worksheets.

How An Escape Room Works in the Classroom

In a classroom escape room activity, the students must answer a series of questions. These questions should be related to the skill being taught in the class. Those answers are used to open a lock. The students must open several locks to escape!

I like to integrate a puzzle that students must solve to convert their answers to the questions into a lock combination. This keeps the escape room fun and engaging, while still having a good amount of academic review.

How to Make the Answers to the Questions Equate to the Lock Combination

One way to make the questions a solution to the lock is to use multiple choice questions. By doing so, after answering three or four questions correlated to one lock, the students should have a four-character combination (ABCD or CDBB or DABC, etc).

Then, set up a cypher or a puzzle that students solve after having answered all of the questions. In the image above, students are giving a cypher, connecting each hyrogpligh to an English letter. By correctly translating the word, they know what number corresponds to A, B, C, and D. Then, if they answered the questions correctly, they will have the combination, which they enter into the lock to open.

Extra Fun

For an extra element of excitement, purchase actual locks (https://amzn.to/4bSuE89) that students have to enter the codes into.
