From Making Extra Money on TpT
You know you should start a Teachers Pay Teachers page to start selling your resources, lesson plans, and other cool things you’re doing in your classroom. But you haven’t. And you keep telling yourself one of the following 5 statements.
I hope to tear through these so that you will begin a TpT seller page today and change your life.
1 – I Don’t Have Time to Start a TpT Page
I am constantly encouraging teachers to change their lives by starting a TpT page and making some extra money. The excuse I’m hit with the most is that the teacher doesn’t have time.
While I fully appreciate how busy we as teachers are, let me encourage you – you do have some time to get this task done.
First, it doesn’t take that much time. I find it hard to believe that you can’t find 60 or 90 minutes this week to do what’s needed to change your life. What’s always amusing to me is that I will ask this question on social media and get inundated with comments about not having time. If you’re so busy, how do you have time to scan social media and post such funny GIFs about how you don’t have any time?
What’s great about selling on TpT is that you get to take advantage of that time that’s unproductive. Like the 30 minutes after your kids go to sleep, or when your wife is watching a Hallmark movie. Now, instead of playing on your phone you can generate extra income for your family.
2 – I’d Rather Give my Stuff Away for Free
That’s very noble of you and there’s nothing wrong with giving away your resources to other teachers for free instead of charging a few dollars.
But let me ask you this: have you?
Have you given away your resources to other teachers for free? If so, how many?
I have a TpT seller page that is making several hundred dollars every month. On it, I have well over 10 free resources that have been downloaded several thousand times.
So you can give away your resources, and then sell some of them for a small amount and make some extra money that will benefit you and your family.
3 – I Don’t Have Original Content
I find this hard to believe. I’ve seen how we teachers are. We’re very creative and produce great resources for our classroom.
The issue is that we think that because we’re adapting a resource or making a resource that goes with a movie or book, it’s not original.
I bet you have a lot of original stuff that you don’t realize.
Don’t let this hold you back. Read my post below to learn how you can use the resources you are making, even if you don’t think that they’re original.
4 – I’m Not Good at Graphic Design
While I understand your concern, let me encourage you of TWO THINGS.
One. Graphic design is not necessary to become successful at selling on TpT. It does help, but you can do well without great images or fancy borders. I went a while before making my stuff look good – some of it still doesn’t look that great because I’m working back through my stuff and updating it.
Two. The amount of graphic design you need to know for TpT is minimal and can be easily learned. With a little bit of time invested on the internet or YouTube, you can learn this skill.

5 – I Don’t Know Where to Begin
This may be the most legitimate of the excuses outlined in this post, but please don’t let it hold you back.
This website has tons of free resources to help you start a TpT store and do well with it. Beyond that, I have a class that will walk you through the process and give you a step-by-step game plan to help you start and find success.
Starting a TpT selling page is not terribly difficult, and can be learned fairly easily. However, there are a lot of great strategies and tips that can help you be successful. But even if you don’t learn these things, you should still start – because you can start making money to improve your life.
